A new book by art historian and archaeologist David Stuart offers a sweeping history of the Maya civilization across more than three millennia. The Four Heavens (Princeton University Press, 2026) brings the cultural and visual richness of the ancient Maya to life, drawing on the oldest indigenous texts of the Americas alongside the latest archaeological discoveries to present a bold new perspective on this remarkable civilization.
Rather than a single rise and fall, Stuart reveals a dynamic history marked by cycles of growth, transformation, and renewal. Made possible through the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing — a field Stuart has helped shape — this is a history told increasingly from the Maya perspective.
Tracing the emergence of early settlements in the rainforest to the height of Classic-period city life, Stuart introduces a world of powerful royal courts, complex alliances, and rival dynasties. He explores how long-standing tensions — particularly between the Kanul and Mutul kingdoms — helped shape the political landscape and contributed to the profound societal shifts of the ninth century.
Richly illustrated, including Stuart’s own drawings, The Four Heavens is both a work of deep scholarship and a vivid portrait of the Maya world — its history, artistry, and enduring complexity.
